Drosera sessilifolia is known to inhabit the region from northern Venezuela to southwestern Brazil. It is one of the most common varieties of Drosera in South America. It is an annual which is related to Drosera burmanii and with which it can be hybridized to form the fertile form of Drosera thelocalyxiana. Even though Drosera sessifolia is one of the most widespread, it is very rare to observe.
The leaves of Drosera burmannii are more triangular and those of Drosera sessilifolia more round. The leaves form a flat rosette on the ground. The rosette is about 4 cm in diameter and the leaves are shaped like a spoon. In full sun, the plant turns red. A stem rises from the rosette in summer and develops a pink flower that will contain several seeds. Insects are attracted to the leaves by the shine of these hairs. The leaves wrap around the prey like the movement of a wrist. Once caught, the insect is digested by digestive fluids emitted by the plant. This is a unique way to obtain nitrogen, allowing these plants to live in soils poor in this substance. Hardiness zones 7-10, (1 C / 35 F, -15 C / 5 F) in Winter. It grows in full sun. It can germinate well in a mixture of one part sphagnum moss for one part sand. When cultivated, Drosera sessilifolia is often smaller than those found in the wild. In nature, there are small populations not far from roads, where cows and horses are nearby. This may depend on the more fertile soils found there. In cultivation, you can therefore try to fertilize it. It needs an atmosphere and a moist soil. The water should be distilled or rainwater, since they do not tolerate tap water. It is a good idea to place a saucer containing an inch of water, under the pot. Raise the pot by placing pebbles, so that the base of the pot is barely in contact with the water. This will provide the plant with a constant source of moisture. Humidity should be between 60-80%
