Listing is for 5 Seeds Pinecone ginger (Zingiber zerumbet) originated in India, but can be found globally throughout the tropics and in Florida’s subtropical gardens. In the family Zingiberaceae, this fragrant ornamental perennial has leafy stems growing from a forked (sympodial) underground, fleshy rhizome-stem. All flowering plants are called angiosperms. Common names for Zingiber zerumbet include awapuhi kuahiwi in Hawaiian, bitter ginger, and shampoo ginger. It is a “c” not native to Hawaii, North America or Florida but was introduced by pre-European settlers and/or post-European immigrants. Multiple stems with lush green foliage appear in springtime to form clumps that impart a tropical look to Florida gardens. From late summer into fall, 10- to 12-inch flower stems are topped with a single, cone-like bracted inflorescence that is spirally arranged like a green pinecone. When fleshy cones turn red, small whitish flowers emerge between the bracts. When gently squeezed, a replenishable clear, fragrant liquid can be oozed from the “cone.” It can be used as a hair cleansing shampoo and as an ingredient in lotions, shampoos and cosmetics.
