Ruby grass (Melinis nerviglumis 'Pink Crystals') prefers moist soil and should be watered regularly. Aim to give the plant about 1-2 inches of water per week, either from rainfall or supplemental irrigation, and ensure the soil does not dry out completely. During periods of hotter weather, additional water may be required, so ensure the soil is kept moist (but not soggy). Generally, avoid watering during times of extreme heat or cold, and refrain from overwatering as this can cause root rot.

Ruby grass typically prefers full sunlight to partial shade with at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight every day. It does best in more arid climates, so it should not be exposed to too much humidity since this could cause fungal issues for the plant.

Pruning is an important part of caring for Ruby Grass. To keep the plant looking its best, prune it back in early summer, when it begins to look untidy or has stopped blooming. When pruning, cut off any dead or damaged foliage, as well as any long or lanky stems. Only take off about a third of the total foliage, as this will encourage new growth and a bushier plant. With a light pruning, Ruby Grass should continue to grow and bloom for many seasons.
