Fountainbush is a drought tolerant plant species, however it does require regular watering during its growing season (spring, summer, and fall). Under typical growing conditions, it requires 1 to 2 waterings per week when the soil is dry to the touch. During hot summer months, supplementing with a deep soaking of the soil once a week may be necessary. Be sure to always check the soil moisture before watering to ensure that it does not get over or under watered.

Fountainbush (Russelia equisetiformis) prefers sunny locations and should receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight every day. During the summer months, when days are longest, the plant should get at least 8 hours of sunlight per day to ensure proper growth and flowering. In winter, when days are shorter, the plant should get at least 4 hours of sunlight for optimal health. It should not be placed in full shade since this can lead to leggy growth.

Fountainbush is a plant species that is relatively easy to maintain since it doesn't require much pruning. Pruning should only be done when the plant becomes overgrown or when branches and stems start to get woody. Pruning should be done sparingly, reducing the size of fountainbush only by 1/3 at a time in the late spring or early summer. Avoid pruning fountainbush during the fall to prevent damage to the plant.
