Showy Stonecrop prefers moist, well-drained soils, so water it when the soil is dry to a depth of 2 to 3 inches. In summer, water the plant 2 to 3 times a week, but lower this to once a week during winter or times of when there is significant rainfall. Over-watering can cause root rot, so make sure the plant is not standing in water for extended periods of time. In the cooler months, you can water the plant every 2 to 3 weeks.

Showy stonecrop (Hylotelephium spectabile 'Stardust') does best with full sun in the morning and partial shade in the afternoon. This will ensure the plant gets plenty of sunlight and won't become scorched by the intense summer heat. As a general rule, give the plant 6 hours or more of direct sunlight each day, ideally between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

In general, Showy Stonecrop (Hylotelephium spectabile 'Stardust') should be pruned once a year in early spring, just before the new growth starts. To reshape a mature plant, the entire plant may need to be cut down to about 6"-8" above the ground. This will not only shape the plant and promote a dense form, but also eliminate possible woody stems. Dead or damaged stems should also be removed. It is important to keep in mind when pruning that Showy Stonecrop will re-sprout from the base of the remaining stem.
