Rock-Dwelling Sedge

Rock-Dwelling Sedge should be watered once a week during the spring and summer growing seasons. Sufficient water should be applied to keep the soil slightly moist but not soggy. During the winter months, let the soil dry between watering. A good way to water is to thoroughly wet the soil down to a depth of 4 to 5 inches.

Rock-Dwelling Sedge (Carex petricosa) grows well in full sun or partial shade, although it does best with partial sun. It requires 4 to 6 hours of sunlight per day for healthy growth. If it is exposed to intense direct sunlight for too long, the plant will become stressed. The best time for the plant to get its sunlight is during the morning, as intense afternoon sun can cause the leaves to sunburn.

Rock-Dwelling Sedge should be pruned once a year, in late spring or early summer, to encourage fresh, healthy growth. Prune off dead, broken, or discolored stems and remove any shoots that appear to be growing too close together. Cut these back to about 1-third of their current length. Rock-Dwelling Sedge can also benefit from occasional light pruning throughout the growing season. Deadhead and remove any fading flowering stems to encourage new ones to form. By pruning once a year and providing light maintenance through summer, Rock-Dwelling Sedge will remain healthy for years to come.
