watering

Paper flower (Bougainvillea cv.) should be watered when the soil has dried, usually every 3-4 days. The amount of water will depend on the temperatures and humidity, so watch the soil and adjust accordingly. In very hot or dry weather, water more often but give only enough to keep the soil from drying out completely. In cooler, humid weather, water every 7-10 days. Always water deeply, and avoid wetting the leaves as this can cause leaf damage.

sunlight

A paper flower (Bougainvillea cv.) enjoys direct sunlight for the majority of the day, at least 6 to 8 hours.. In cooler temperatures, the paper flower should have full sun for several hours, especially during the morning hours.

pruning

Paper flower (Bougainvillea cv.) is best pruned in late winter/early spring, as the plant breaks dormancy. This species benefits from a light and frequent pruning, up to 4 times a year. Pruning little and often will encourage the plant to produce new shoots. Always sterilize cutting tools between uses to reduce the risk of spreading disease. Start by removing any dead, damaged or diseased branches. Cut them just above a node (a vegetation point) and dispose of away from the garden. In late winter/early spring, reduce the length of long stems to encourage more fuller growth. Make sure to leave enough stem to allow for a healthy pruning the following year. When pruning, ensure to maintain the natural bushy shape of the paper flower. If there is unwanted growth or a section of the plant starting to become lanky and unbalanced – cut it back. Trim around the edges of the plant too to keep it tidy.
