watering
This Japanese clethra species should be watered deeply and regularly throughout the growing season to ensure the health of the plant. During the spring and summer months, water the plant once every 5-7 days with 1-2 inches of water. Be sure to check the soil frequently and water when it feels dry to the touch. In the fall and winter months, water the plant every 2 weeks, again with 1-2 inches of water. If your area receives significant rainfall during these months, you can reduce the amount of water you give to the Japanese clethra. Consistency is key; make sure that the plant is receiving the same amount of water each time.
sunlight
The Japanese clethra species (Clethra barbinervis 'Takeda Nishiki' FIRST SNOW) prefers full sun to partial sun with at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight every day. If it is not getting this much direct sunlight, then the plant will become weak and the blooms may not be as abundant. It should be placed in a location where it will receive morning sun and some afternoon shade, or dappled shade if possible. In addition, try to avoid planting it in an area where it will be exposed to strong winds as this can damage the foliage.
pruning
Japanese clethra (Clethra barbinervis 'Takeda Nishiki' FIRST SNOW) should be pruned early spring. Prune out up to 1-third of the older stems and generally thin the plant to open up the canopy to allow light and air penetration. Cut back branches to within a few centimeters or a few inches of the stem or branch at the base to create uniform lateral branching for an improved appearance and healthier growth. Pruning also encourages branching and the production of more flowers. Finally, remove any dead, diseased or damaged branches as soon as possible. Japanese clethra should be pruned annually to maintain a desired size and shape.
