watering

This plant requires a moderate amount of water as it is drought tolerant once established. During the warmer active growing months, water Montbretia (Crocosmia crocosmiiflora 'Buttercup') about once a week, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. If the weather is hot and dry, you may need to water more often, as much as every few days. During the winter months, they require much less water. Water deeply, but infrequently, only as needed to keep the soil from drying out completely.

sunlight

Montbretia (Crocosmia crocosmiiflora 'Buttercup') is a showy flowering plant that needs plenty of sunlight in order to thrive. It should receive at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight per day, preferably in the morning or early afternoon. This species does best when it is able to soak up the sun's rays all morning and then has some time in the afternoon to be sheltered from the heat. Montbretia should not be kept in shade for more than 5 hours a day as this will not provide the light it needs to thrive. Montbretia will benefit from being placed in an area where it can receive dappled sunlight. This will provide a balance of direct sunlight and shade.

pruning

Montbretia should be pruned each year in late summer or early fall. Cut the flower stems and foliage back to the ground, removing any faded or damaged stems along the way. This will help promote strong basal growth and more flowers for next season. It is best not to prune any other branches or stems during this time.
