watering
Montbretia is a fairly thirsty plant, requiring regular watering in warmer months. Water montbretia deeply and thoroughly, so that the soil is evenly moist but not waterlogged. Aim to water the plant once per week in the growing season (roughly April–September)and once every 2 weeks in the winter months (October–March), increasing to as often as every 2–3 days if the soil is exceptionally dry. Keep an eye on the soil during periods of drought and dry weather, and water as needed.
sunlight
Montbretia is a sun loving plant species and ideally needs 6-8 hours of direct sunlight for the best growth and blooming. It is a hardy, low-maintenance plant, but too much shade can reduce flowering. If possible, choose a spot that receives direct sunlight for most of the day. Montbretia prefers early morning sunlight, and midday or late afternoon sun can be too intense in summer.
pruning
Montbretia (Crocosmia 'Lucifer') should be pruned once a year in late winter to early spring. Pruning should be minimal – remove any dead or damaged foliage and flowers that have died back or become bracts. This encourages a strong new flush of foliage and flowers. It is also important to keep the plant at a manageable size by removing up to 1-third of the older stems. Once finished, feed with an organic fertiliser and water well. This should help to bring a full, vibrant blooming period.
