watering

When caring for a border carnation, water it with about 1 inch of water per week, either directly or using drip irrigation. The soil should be kept moist but not wet. During especially hot and dry weather, it can be necessary to water it twice a week. If it is grown in pots, watering should be done more frequently. Be sure not to overwater and don't let the soil become soggy. Furthermore, make sure the carnations get plenty of direct sunlight and are planted in well-draining soil with a neutral pH level.

sunlight

Border carnations (Dianthus 'Pixie') should ideally receive 5-6 hours of full sun a day, or more indirect light, such as morning sun with afternoon shade. During the summer months, the plant should receive some protection from the afternoon sun to help prevent damage from heat or dehydration. In temperate climates or cool summer climates, direct afternoon sun may be tolerated. During colder months, border carnations may require some protection from frost. Ensure the plant is kept moist, but not soggy, during the growing season and reduce the amount of water you provide in the winter months.

pruning

Border carnation (Dianthus 'Pixie') should be pruned annually for optimal health and beauty, in early spring before new growth appears. Remove about 1/3 of the plant's older, woody stems near their base. This helps to stimulate new growth and keep the plant looking lush. A light pruning can also be done throughout the year to remove dead, damaged or diseased stems, and to shape the plant. In late summer or early fall you can prune the carnations back further down to 6 inches, and then in late winter or early spring, to 3 inches.
