watering

Paperbush should be watered every 5-7 days, depending on soil type, temperature and humidity. In warmer weather, the plant may need additional water if it has been exposed to drying winds or intense sun. During the summer, it is best to water deeply 1-2 times a week. During the winter, reduce watering to once a month. Soak the entire root ball thoroughly, and allow the soil to dry out between waterings.

sunlight

Paperbush shrubs prefer full sun, but can tolerate some light shade. In mild western winter climates, the snow cream variety of paperbush (Edgeworthia chrysantha 'Snow Cream') can perform best when it receives at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight each day, especially during late winter and early spring. In areas with more intense summer sun, however, some afternoon shading may be more beneficial for the shrub. During the summer, the paperbush should receive an average of at least 6 to 8 hours of sunlight daily for optimal growth.

pruning

Paperbush (Edgeworthia chrysantha 'Snow Cream') should be pruned in early spring, before new growth begins. Prune off the old, woody stems to encourage new growth. One technique is to remove 1-third of the oldest stems each year, cutting back to the base of the plant. Pruning should also be used to shape the shrub, keeping it tidy and maintaining its desired size.
