watering
Gaura requires regular watering in order to thrive. Water your gaura deeply and slowly, providing enough water to completely saturate the soil. During periods of high heat and low rainfall, you may need to water twice a week. In cooler temperatures and times of average rainfall, once a week should be sufficient. Do not allow the soil to remain soggy as this can cause root rot and lead to disease and insect infestations. Be sure to check the soil before each watering to make sure it is dry before you apply more water.
sunlight
Gaura (Gaura lindheimeri 'Nugauwhite' KARALEE WHITE) is a native of the southern United States and prefers to be grown in full sun. This plant requires at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight a day for optimal growth and flowering. It will tolerate some shade, but it won't flower as profusely and won't reach its full size or robustness. Plant Gaura in areas that receive full sunlight for most of the day, such as a south- or west-facing bed or garden. If planted in a more shaded area, it may require some supplemental lighting to ensure full flowering potential.
pruning
Gaura (Gaura lindheimeri 'Nugauwhite' KARALEE WHITE) is best pruned in late winter or early spring. Prune back the previous year’s growth by approximately 1-third to 1-half in order to allow light and air to penetrate the plant. Removal of any dead, damaged, or diseased stems is also recommended. Leave the stalks right above where they emerged from the ground intact as these provide structure and support for the plant. Additionally, trim off any old and leggy growth, as well as any stems that have crossed over or are rubbing against each other. Keep in mind that Gaura tends to get quite large and flowers in abundance so be sure to give it enough room to mature and fill out nicely.
