watering
Gaura needs to be watered once a week or as needed when the soil feels dry to the touch. When watering, use enough water to thoroughly saturate the soil, approximately 1-2 inches weekly. When watering with a garden hose, water at a slow rate for an extended period of time to ensure that the water is able to penetrate the soil and not simply run off the surface. During especially dry weather, it may be necessary to water twice a week. As a general rule of thumb, avoid over-watering, which can lead to root rot and other diseases.
sunlight
Gaura lindheimeri 'Passionate Rainbow' grows best in full sunlight for 6-8 hours per day. The best time of day to provide sunlight is between 10 am and 4 pm, when the rays of the sun are the strongest. During the hottest days of summer, some afternoon shade may be beneficial to protect the plant from sunburn. Without enough sunlight, Gaura lindheimeri will become leggy and produce fewer flowers.
pruning
Gaura (Gaura lindheimeri 'Passionate Rainbow') should be pruned once a year in the springtime. It is best to prune away any stems and dead flowers that have not bloomed. Pruning after the first flush of flowers will help promote a second flowering cycle for the season. It is important to keep the plant’s flowering cycle and appearance in mind when pruning, as to not damage the plants growth. There is no set rule on how much to prune, however, as a general guide, it is best to remove no more than a third or half of the stems. The removed stems should be pruned just above where a bud is growing. Keep in mind not to prune the main leader stem of the plant so that it does not slow the process of future flowering cycles.
