Gaura needs to be watered once a week or as needed when the soil feels dry to the touch. When watering, use enough water to thoroughly saturate the soil, approximately 1-2 inches weekly. When watering with a garden hose, water at a slow rate for an extended period of time to ensure that the water is able to penetrate the soil and not simply run off the surface. Pruning after the first flush of flowers will help promote a second flowering cycle for the season. It is important to keep the plant’s flowering cycle and appearance in mind when pruning, as to not damage the plants growth. There is no set rule on how much to prune, however, as a general guide, it is best to remove no more than a third or half of the stems. The removed stems should be pruned just above where a bud is growing. Keep in mind not to prune the main leader stem of the plant so that it does not slow the process of future flowering cycles.
