watering

Hardy Hibiscus plants should be watered deeply and extensively early in the morning so that the foliage has a chance to dry out during the day. When initially planting, make sure to thoroughly soak the roots and surrounding soil and then check in a few hours to see if more water is needed. During the first few months of establishment, make sure to check the soil daily and water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry to the touch. Once established and thereafter, the plants should be watered 1 to 2 times a week. Again, it is best to water deeply and thoroughly so that all of the plant’s root system gets a good soak. During periods of abnormally dry weather, the frequency of watering may need to be increased.

sunlight

Hardy hibiscus (Hibiscus moscheutos 'Luna Rose') thrives in full sun, meaning 6 or more hours of direct sunlight each day. This plant prefers the morning sun, as afternoon heat and sunlight can be intensive and damaging, resulting in wilting and possible death of the plant. If possible, plant your hardy hibiscus in an area with afternoon shade for optimal protection from the sun's rays.

pruning

Hardy hibiscus (Hibiscus moscheutos 'Luna Rose') should be pruned each year after flowering in late winter or early spring. Pruning off the old flower stems encourages the production of fresh flower buds and helps to keep the shrub’s size manageable. New growth can be cut back by a third, but no more. Pruning too much can remove flower-producing buds and will delay flowering. The shrub can be shaped to any size and should be pruned by removing the oldest stems at the base of the shrub. This helps maintain a fuller growth habit and eliminates the need to prune it severely.
