watering

Hosta sieboldii 'Kabitan' plants should be watered regularly during the growing season. Water thoroughly when the soil is dry to about 1½-2 inches (4-5 cm.) deep. During the summer months, the plant should be watered about once a week allowing the soil surface to dry slightly between watering. In hotter climates, the plant may need more frequent watering. Generally, however, overwatering should be avoided to prevent root problems. In winter, reduce watering to 1 time per month allowing the soil to dry completely between watering.

sunlight

Hosta sieboldii 'Kabitan' plants prefer bright, indirect sunlight and will do best when they get 4 to 6 hours of all-day sun. This plant prefers partial shade. Avoid full shade, as too much shade can cause weak plant growth with few flowers. Morning sun is ideal for this species as the direct light reduces the chance of sunburn on and scorching of the large, blue-green foliage. Additionally, too much sun can cause the leaves to wilt, yellow or brown. Due to its need for partial shade, Hosta sieboldii 'Kabitan' should be planted in an area protected from strong winds, which can cause wilting.

pruning

When it comes to pruning Hosta sieboldii 'Kabitan', it's best to wait until the foliage begins to fade in mid-fall. At this point, simply remove the foliage, cutting it back to a few inches above the crown of the plant. In doing so, you'll provide your plant with better air circulation and more room for new growth in the spring. You can also lightly trim any remaining stems to encourage branching. It's important to note that Hosta sieboldii 'Kabitan' does not need to be heavily pruned year after year; only minimal pruning is needed to maintain the desired shape and size.
