watering
Hosta ‘Undulata Variegata’ thrives in moist, well-drained soil. During the growing season (April through October), this plant should be watered deeply about once a week, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Water thoroughly, until it begins to come out the drainage holes of the pot. In the winter, reduce waterings to once a month or less, just enough to keep the soil from drying out completely. If you are growing Hosta ‘Undulata Variegata’ in the ground, pay extra attention to ensure the soil does not dry out in the summer months.
sunlight
Hosta 'Undulata Variegata' is a perennial plant species that prefers Partial Shade to Full Shade, which means it grows best with 4-6 hours of direct sun per day, preferably in the morning. It thrives in moist, well-draining soil and will become quickly weakened if it's grown in soils that are too wet or dry. In general, it needs somewhere between medium and low levels of sunlight for optimal growth. Too much direct sunlight can cause the leaves to turn brown and dry and will prevent the plant from producing flowers. If the leaves are yellow or have patches of burnt color, then the plant has been exposed to too much sunlight. Given the right amount of sunlight, this species of Hosta flourishes best in temperatures ranging from 60-75 degrees Fahrenheit (15-23 degrees Celsius).
pruning
Hosta 'Undulata Variegata' should be pruned in late winter or early spring, just before new growth begins. Pruning may be light or heavy depending on how vigorous the plant is; however, it is best to err on the light side since too much pruning may affect the health of the plant. To reduce the height of the plant and create a rounder shape, prune back the flower stems to within 1-2 inches of the base. To control further growth, prune back the remaining foliage to 5-7 inches above the ground. Dead, damaged or diseased leaves may also be pruned out at any time during the growing season.
