watering

Bigleaf hydrangeas should be watered weekly, and thoroughly. Water deeply in the mornings, and then give enough water to soak all the way down to the roots of the plant. Avoid watering too late in the day when temperatures cool and leaves may stay wet overnight which can encourage disease. During hot, dry days, give the plant about an inch of water per week. Additionally, during periods of extended hot, dry weather, hydrate the plants with an occasional long soak.

sunlight

Bigleaf hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla 'Hortmahar' EVERLASTING HARMONY) thrive best in bright, indirect light. When it comes to sunlight, 6 to 8 hours of light per day is best. Direct sunlight should be avoided, as it can scorch the foliage. Morning sun is best since it is less intense. If the plant is not receiving enough sunlight, the flowers will be smaller and less impressive. Make sure to provide the plant with enough light to get the most out of its blooming potential.

pruning

Bigleaf Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Hortmahar’ EVERLASTING HARMONY) should be pruned immediately after flowering in the early spring, before new growth begins. Cut back the flower stems to about 1-half of their original length and also remove any dead or damaged wood.Be careful to not over-prune the bush; prune selectively to maintain the desired shape of the shrub. An annual light pruning is also recommended in the late winter to remove overcrowded stems and reduce the size of the plant if needed. Pruning at any other time is not recommended, as the shrub may not flower well or at all the following season.
