watering

Oakleaf Hydrangeas (Hydrangea quercifolia 'Vaughn's Lillie') should be kept consistently moist, but not soggy. Water deeply every 1-2 weeks; adjust more frequently during extreme heat. When the soil dries down about 3 inches remove excess mulch and check for moisture. If the soil feels dry to the touch then it’s time to water. Wilting foliage is usually an indication that the plant needs more water.

sunlight

Oakleaf hydrangeas thrive in areas that receive full sun to partial shade. At least 4 to 6 hours of sunlight is preferred per day. In warmer climates, it is best to provide morning sun only or afternoon sun. Providing too much direct sunlight can cause the leaves to burn and wilt. Morning sun is ideal for oakleaf hydrangeas.

pruning

Oakleaf Hydrangea should be pruned in the spring just as new growth begins to emerge. Prune off any damaged, diseased, or dead branches to help encourage new growth. Only prune 1/3 of the plant’s growth each year, removing branches that are crossing each other or are growing at undesired angles. Older branches can be thinned out as well to promote light and air through the middle of the plant. Generally, no pruning is necessary beyond this annual pruning.
