watering

Tall bearded iris (Iris 'Florentina') should be watered deeply once every 7-10 days during active growth season. During bloom season, water once every 2-3 days for 3-4 weeks. During active growth, it should be watered enough to keep the soil moist, but not flooded. After bloom season, reduce watering to once every 10-14 days. During the wintertime, water only enough to keep the soil from becoming completely dry.

sunlight

Tall bearded iris (Iris 'Florentina') require at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day in order to thrive. This sunbathing should occur during the morning or mid-afternoon, as the plant needs to avoid the heat of the late afternoon or early evening, when temperatures may be too high for it to flourish. As long as the sun is consistent and temperatures aren't too extreme, Iris 'Florentina' should do well in full sun.

pruning

Tall bearded irises (Iris 'Florentina') should be pruned once a year in late summer or early fall. Pruning involves removing the dead, damaged and spent foliage, as well as any seed pods that have formed. This allows for better air movement through the plant, and will help the flower stalks produced next year stand tall and strong and avoid fungal diseases. Prune the foliage back to the ground, leaving about 3-4 inches of foliage and flower stalks to be visible. This also makes the plant look much tidier and enhances its display in the garden.
