watering

Chinese junipers should be watered thoroughly once a week when the soil is slightly dry to the touch. Do not allow the soil to become bone dry between watering. During the summer months, Chinese junipers may need to be watered more frequently in order to keep the soil moist, but not saturated. During the cooler months, the frequency of watering can be reduced accordingly. If possible, water with rainwater instead of tap water as Chinese junipers can be sensitive to hard water or salt.

sunlight

Chinese juniper (Juniperus chinensis ‘Blue Vase’) requires full sun for best growth and color. When mature, this evergreen tree can reach heights of up to 10 feet. It should be planted in a location that receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day for optimal growth. During the summer, Chinese junipers may even appreciate a few more hours of sunlight to reach their full potential. Placing it in a spot that receives full sun throughout the day is recommended for best success.

pruning

Chinese juniper should be pruned in early spring or late fall, when the weather is cool but not cold. Pruning in late winter just before growth starts is also possible for light pruning.Heavy pruning should be avoided in late winter as it will encourage vigorous growth which is prone to damage in cold weather. Prune lightly or moderately when removing wornout growth, shaping, or rejuvenating your plant. Avoid cutting back too far into old wood as young shoots will not emerge. Any pruning or training should be completed before the summer heat arrives.
