Common juniper (Juniperus communis var. depressa) should be watered in small amounts as needed, usually once every 7-10 days. During the warmer months, it is best to water in the morning to reduce the risk of leaves burning in direct sunlight. During the cooler months, water in the evening when the air is cooler. Do not overwater, as this can cause root rot and leave the plant prone to disease. For best results, water according to the soil’s moisture levels. If the soil feels dry to the touch, it is time to water. When watering, it is important to ensure that the water penetrates both the soil and the root zone. Use your finger to check that the soil throughout the pot is moist but not waterlogged.

Common juniper needs plenty of sunlight all year round. In general, aim to provide it around 6-8 hours of direct, unfiltered sunlight per day during the growing season of April to September. However, in winter, when the daylight hours are shorter, 6-8 hours may not be possible. In this case, try for at least 4-5 hours per day of direct sunlight. With ideal light conditions, common juniper is capable of reaching 6-10 feet in height.

Common juniper should be pruned twice a year – once in spring and once in summer – to promote healthy growth. In spring, remove dead or weak branches and shape the shrub. In summer, cut back just enough to maintain the desired size and shape, without creating a bald spot. For maximum growth, begin with 1/3 of growth removal and gradually increase the amount of pruning each year, as needed. Avoid removing more than 1/3 of growth in a year.
