watering

Shrub lespedeza should be watered deeply and infrequently. Provide supplemental water on dry periods with 1-2 inches of water every 10-14 days. Avoid overhead watering as this can lead to disease and mildew problems. Water in the early morning to reduce evaporation and give the plant time to dry off before night. Mulch around the base to conserve soil moisture between waterings.

sunlight

Shrub lespedeza (Lespedeza bicolor) is a plant species that thrives in sunny conditions and requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. For optimal growth, it should be provided with a full day of direct sunlight. It tolerates partial shade but flower production will be diminished. It should be grown in a spot that receives at least 4 hours of morning sunlight and 4 hours of afternoon sunlight for the best results.

pruning

Shrub lespedeza (Lespedeza bicolor) should be pruned twice a year, once in early spring and once in late fall. When pruning in early spring, remove up to 1-third of the stems without cutting into old wood while also avoiding stems that have the new buds. In late fall, prune to the ground to encourage bushy growth. When thinning out the wood, avoid cutting into old wood. This species also does well with an occasional light pruning during the Summer growing season when more compact growth is desired.
