Blazing star (Liatris spicata) should be watered deeply 1-2 times a week in the growing season. Depending on the pot size, this could mean up to 8 gallons of water for each watering. Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. During periods of drought, however, additional waterings may be needed. In the winter, water only if the plant is wilting and the soil feels dry. Keep in mind that too much water can lead to fungal disease.

In areas with intense sunlight, such as in hot and humid climates, it may be beneficial for this plant to receive some protection from the hottest afternoon hours. Blazing star (Liatris Spicata) should be pruned in early to mid-spring, once any frost danger has passed. Pruning is done to promote more full growth and blossom production for the summer. Remove any damaged, dead, or crossed stems. Cut stems back to just above a set of buds or leaves. Avoid pruning more than 1-third of the plant or flowering spike, as too much pruning can reduce flowering for that season.
