watering

Regal lilies need to be watered about once a week or when the top few inches of soil become dry. During the summer months, expect to water slightly more (approximately every 4-5 days) when the weather is hot and dry. When watering, be sure to provide enough so that the water trickles from the drainage holes to ensure that the entire root system is evenly moistened and that the soil is draining properly. Avoid getting the leaves of the plant wet, as this can increase their chance for fungal disease or development of other problems. In areas of extreme heat or extreme cold, monitor the plants more closely. When the temperature drops below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, it’s best to reduce the amount of water given to the plants to about twice a month.

sunlight

Regal lilies need at least 4-6 hours of full, direct sunlight each day, preferably in the morning or early afternoon. They also prefer bright, indirect light throughout the day. Too much direct, intense sunlight can lead to damage or wilt, so it is best to provide shelter from the afternoon rays if possible. Regularfeeding with a balanced fertilizer will also help them to thrive, as will ample watering and well draining soil.

pruning

Regal lilies should be pruned in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Pruning should be done by cutting all of the stems 5 to 6 inches above the ground. This encourages new growth and will help to keep the plant’s shape. To keep the plant looking full and healthy, dead or damaged stems should be removed as needed throughout the growing season. Additionally, any spent flower stems should be cut down to the basal foliage level. It is important to avoid pruning more than a third of the plant at 1 time.
