watering

Lily turf (Liriope muscari 'Variegata') should be watered regularly and deeply during its first growing season. In subsequent years, water the plant deeper but not as often. In the spring and summer, water the plant deeply (approximately 1” to 2” of water) once a week. However, during periods of drought or heat waves, increase watering to twice a week. In the winter, water if there is lack of rainfall and the soil becomes dry. Over-watering lily turf can cause stunted plants, foliage and flower discoloration, and root rot. Gutters and piles of mulch should also be avoided. Finally, during periods of high heat and humidity, leave a lightly moist but not saturated soil.

sunlight

Lily turf (Liriope muscari 'Variegata') grows best in bright, indirect sunlight. It should receive at least 4 to 5 hours of indirect sunlight each day. However, avoid placing it in direct, hot afternoon sun, which can damage the foliage. The variegated foliage tends to be more sensitive to direct sunlight. An east- or north-facing window is an ideal location to place the lily turf.

pruning

Lily turf (Liriope muscari 'Variegata') should be pruned in early spring, just before new growth begins. Pruning should be done lightly - removing only brown leaves and thinning out any crowded clumps. Additionally, lily turf can be trimmed back to the ground in late winter or early spring to control its size. This type of pruning should not be done more than once every 2-3 years. When done more often, the plants can become weaker and susceptible to diseases.
