watering

Sweet alyssum should be watered every 2 to 3 days, depending on the weather. In hotter or windier weather they will need more frequent watering. The soil should be kept moist, but not saturated. If the soil is allowed to dry out too much the leaves will start to wilt and the plant may not recover. If the foliage is wilted or droopy, gently water the plant and it will usually perk up.

sunlight

Sweet alyssum (Lobularia maritima) prefers full sunlight for at least 6 to 8 hours per day for optimal growth. When grown in partial shade, the plant will produce fewer blossoms and more foliage. It should also be noted that during periods of extreme heat, it is best to provide some shade to the plant to avoid scorching it. To ensure maximum success, provide it with a location that is exposed to full sun in spring and fall but filtered shade in summer.

pruning

Sweet alyssum can be pruned to maintain its size and shape. Pruning should be done in early spring before new growth begins. Remove any dead or damaged stems and trim back the whole plant by up to 1 third of its original size. This will promote thicker more bushy growth. Deadhead any spent flowers to promote further flowering. Pruning this plant after mid-summer may reduce blooming in the following year.
