watering

Water Japanese pachysandra plants every 7 to 10 days during the growing season (usually March through October). Make sure to saturate the soil with water until it starts to drain out of the bottom of the container. It is important to avoid over-watering, as this may cause root rot. Watering should be reduced slightly in the winter months, to every 10 to 14 days. During the hot summer months, it's a good idea to check the soil daily. If the top 2 to 3 inches of soil feels dry, give the plant a thorough soak.

sunlight

Japanese pachysandra (Pachysandra terminalis 'Green Sheen') thrives best in full to partial sunlight but can still tolerate light to moderate shade. It should receive at least 4 hours of direct sunlight per day, ideally between the hours of 10am and 3pm. The plant should avoid long periods of direct sunlight during the hottest parts of the day, as this can cause the leaves to burn.

pruning

Japanese pachysandra (Pachysandra terminalis 'Green Sheen') should be pruned twice a year, in late spring and again in midsummer. During the late-spring pruning, trim back any overly dense growth that may be obscuring the plant's unique foliage. Generally, pruning should be done to about 2/3 of the original height. In midsummer pruning, remove any yellowing leaves or stems that have become extremely dense. This pruning will also help to improve air circulation, which will help prevent fungal diseases. Be sure to use sharp shears and never remove more than 1/3 of the original height of the Japanese pachysandra.
