watering
Water tree peonies deeply and consistently throughout the early growing season. Water in the morning hours when soil humidity is low to avoid creating wet conditions at night. Use your finger to test the soil about 1 inch below the surface for moisture; if it is dry, apply water from a hose or a watering can until the soil is saturated and is moist throughout the top 6 to 8 inches of soil. Aim to keep the soil fairly wet until the tree peonies finish flowering. After flowering, cut back significantly on watering until the leaves turn yellowish-brown and start to fall off. Once the leaves are completely yellow, stop watering until the next spring when new growth is visible.
sunlight
Tree peonies (Paeonia ostii 'Feng Dan Bai' PHOENIX WHITE) should be planted in areas with full sunlight for optimal growth and flowering. It does best in bright, indirect light, and should receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day during the summer months. For optimum flower production, the plant should receive sun in the morning and shade in the afternoon. This species does best in cold climates and should have protection from the intense summer sun to prevent wilting. During the winter months, it should be provided with a minimum of 4 hours of direct sunlight each day.
pruning
Tree peonies (Paeonia osti 'Feng Dan Bai' PHOENIX WHITE) should be pruned annually between late fall and late winter each year. Remove any dead branches, spent flowers and damaged stems. Prune any branches that are crossed or rubbing on each other to keep the tree healthy. Pruning should remove no more than 1/3 of the total branches. Don’t prune any of the main growth branches, as these will flower in the following years. Care must be taken to not remove too much foliage and branches as this can cause the tree to be less healthy and may not flower as strongly in the following years.
