Tree peonies should be watered deeply yet sparingly. Trees do not require daily watering, but they do require consistent and regular moisture. During hot summer days, water your tree peonies at least twice a week, allowing the soil to dry in between waterings. When watering, water slowly and deeply to encourage roots to grow deeply. When possible, use water with low salt content; rainwater is best. During winter, tree peonies require little to no water as they become dormant.

Tree peonies require a minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight per day, preferably in the morning and early afternoon only. They should receive the most sunlight exposure possible, but the intensity of the sunlight should be limited to avoid burning the leaves. In hot climates, afternoon shade may be beneficial. Filtered light or dappled sunlight is also suitable. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight in the late afternoon or during midday, however, can burn the bloom and foliage, weakening the plant over time.

Tree peonies (Paeonia suffruticosa 'Fen Lan Pan' PINK BLUE SAUCER) should be pruned in early spring, just after the danger of frost has passed. Pruning should be done carefully as tree peonies are slow growing and will take several years for the full effect of the pruning to be visible. The best approach is to prune no more than 1 third of the height of the shrub in any given year, removing any crossing branches or deadwood. Remove any shoots and twigs that are growing downwards and any that are excessively dense. It is important to identify the initial branching structure when pruning, as this will help you to choose the correct branches to prune to encourage healthy and attractive growth.
