Garden phlox (Phlox paniculata 'Jeana') prefers moist soil, so it needs to be watered adequately. During the growing season, water the plant every 7-10 days until the soil gets moist, but not soggy. During hot or dry weather, water more frequently. Once the blooms start to appear, reduce watering to every 7-10 days or so and then only if the soil feels dry. When the blooms have passed and the foliage begins to yellow, water occasionally to keep the plant healthy and prepare for its dormant phase.

Garden phlox (Phlox paniculata 'Jeana') needs a minimum of 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight per day in order to grow and flower at its best. During the summer months, it prefers full sun, while in the spring and fall, it tolerates more shade. As garden phlox is native to North America, it is not fussy about the type of light it receives and will flourish in direct or indirect light. In the heat of summer, however, it will appreciate some afternoon shade to prevent wilting.

Garden phlox (Phlox paniculata 'Jeana') should be cut down to about 6 to 8 inches during late winter or early spring before new growth appears. This will encourage bushy, healthy new growth in the current year. As the plant grows, it will need a light pruning in the summer after flowering to keep it from getting leggy. If possible, leave some of the old flower heads to provide winter interest.
