watering

Garden phlox (Phlox paniculata 'Mount Fuji') should be watered regularly, about once a week or when the soil appears to be dry. Depending on local weather conditions, the frequency and amount of watering may vary. For example, during the summer months when temperatures are higher, garden phlox needs to be watered more frequently, as much as twice a week. During cooler periods or during periods of heavy rainfall, watering once a week or every 10 days may be sufficient. Be sure to check the soil of the garden phlox before watering; if it’s still damp, wait another day or 2 before watering. Avoid overwatering, as garden phlox is prone to root rot if consistently exposed to too much water. When it comes to how much to water, it really depends on the size of the plant and its pot. Generally, 1″ to 1.5″ of water is sufficient, but large plants may require more. The best way to check if the enough water has been applied is by feeling the soil after the water has been applied—the soil should feel moist but not soggy.

sunlight

Garden phlox (Phlox paniculata ‘Mount Fuji’) does best when grown in full sun. It needs at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day to thrive and bloom. In areas with intense summer heat, some afternoon shade may be beneficial. In more northern climates, or in areas where summer temperatures don’t reach very high levels, garden phlox should be planted in full sun to receive optimal sunlight throughout the day.

pruning

Garden phlox (Phlox paniculata 'Mount Fuji') should be pruned once a year in early spring, just before any new growth begins. It should be pruned back to about 6-8 inches above the ground, removing all spent flowers and embracing stems. This will encourage the plant to send up fresh, healthy stems for blooming. Deadheading (removing spent blossoms) during the blooming season is equally important. Do not prune more than 1/3 of the height of the plant.
