watering

Oriental Arbovitae prefer evenly moist but not soggy soils. Water the plant when the soil becomes dry to the touch. In hot climates, water deeply 2-3 times per week until established, then 1-2 times per week. Once established, Oriental arborvitae is moderately drought tolerant. In cooler climates, water as needed to ensure the soil stays saturated without becoming overly wet. During the growing season, fertilize the Oriental arborvitae once a year in early spring with a slow-release fertilizer.

sunlight

Oriental Arborvitae, also known as Platycladus orientalis 'Elegantissima', prefer full sun or partial shade and need 6 to 8 hours of sunlight per day. In areas that receive intense levels of sunlight in the summer time, partial shade will be beneficial. It's best to place them in a spot that receives morning sun, when the sun is at its lowest intensity, and shade in the afternoon to protect them from intense afternoon heat.

pruning

Oriental arborvitae (Platycladus orientalis 'Elegantissima')should be pruned in early spring (March or April). Pruning should be limited to thinning out any dead or diseased branches, and lightly shaping the tree. Avoid removing more than 10-15% of the overall foliage, as this could damage the tree. Avoid cutting into the main trunk of the tree, as this can lead to branches breaking off in the wind.
