Chinese arborvitae should typically be watered once or twice a week allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Generally, approximately 1.3 - 1.9 gallons of water per week for each plant is recommended, especially during dry spells. When watering, be sure to water deeply so that the water penetrates below the surface of the soil, and keep the plant evenly and consistently moist. Do not over-water as this can cause root rot. Water at the base of the plant, avoiding getting the foliage wet.

The Chinese arborvitae (Platycladus orientalis 'Westmont') requires a moderate amount of sunlight for optimal growth. For best results, it should be planted in an area that receives full sun for 6 to 8 hours a day. In areas with intense summer sunlight, some protection from afternoon sun may be required. Morning sun is best for this species, and in shadier spots, the foliage can become sparse and discolored. In winter, this plant should still receive at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Chinese arborvitae should be pruned annually in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Prune the branches 8 to 10 inches from the ground to maintain the shape of the plant. Remove any dead and diseased branches by cutting them all the way back to the base of the plant. During this time, also look for any crossing branches and prune them back to keep the form of the tree. To keep the shape of a more formal hedge, keep the sides parallel by shearing the top of the shrub.
