watering
The Mexican hat plant needs a moderate amount of water. It should be watered deeply twice per week until the soil becomes saturated. Watering should be done in the morning; avoid late afternoon or evening waterings. Allow the soil to dry out between each watering in order to help prevent root rot. Be sure not to over-water the plant. During the cooler months of fall and winter, water a little less frequently.
sunlight
Mexican hat plants (Ratibida columnifera) require plenty of direct sunlight to thrive. During the summer months in particular, they should be exposed to approximately 6-8 hours of direct sunlight a day. It is best to place the plants in a sunny spot either in the garden or in a south or west-facing window in the home. If possible, avoid placing the plants in an east-facing window, as they might not receive enough sun. To prevent the plants from becoming scorched, it is best to provide plenty of shade or move them to a more shaded area in hotter days. During the cold winter months, Mexican hat plants can tolerate slightly less sunlight, but should still receive at least 4-6 hours a day.
pruning
Mexican hat plant (Ratibida columnifera) should be pruned twice a year. Pruning in early spring is important as it encourages new growth and helps to shape the plant. During this time, remove any dead or damaged foliage, as well as any discolored or old blooms. Give the plant an overall light trim to remove any leggy or damaged stems. Once your Mexican hat plant has finished blooming in mid- to late summer, it’s time for heavier pruning. Cut back any overgrowth and dead or discolored foliage. Try to maintain an even shape and size to the shrub. It is best to avoid drastic pruning so that the plant can retain its natural form. To promote more blooms, trim each flower stem down to 1 to 3 inches. Lastly, trim any new growth to encourage bushier growth.
