watering

Rhododendrons should be watered regularly to keep their soil evenly moist but not soggy. During the active growing season, which is usually spring and summer, water 2 or 3 times a week, allowing the top inch or 2 of soil to dry out before watering again. During the winter and fall when they are dormant, water once every 2 or 3 weeks. If you can, it is best to water with rainwater or non-treated water to avoid any salts and chemicals that can accumulate in plant soil overtime.

sunlight

Rhododendron sinogrande requires dappled light for optimal growth. Place the pot in an area that receives 4 to 6 hours of partial sun each day, such as east or west-facing windowsills. Too little or too much light can cause this evergreen shrub to become sparse, leaves to scorch, and no flowers to bloom. Morning sunlight is ideal, as it will help the plant to dry out quickly. If the plant is experiencing too much shade, lightly filtering the sunlight with sheer curtains or using a grow light to provide supplemental light can help.

pruning

When pruning Rhododendron sinogrande, it is important to use the proper pruning techniques to ensure the health of the plant. The best time to prune this species of Rhododendron is in late winter or early spring, before new growth begins. Prune only a small amount off of the oldest branches of the plant each year. Remove only about 1-third of the stems and try to cut back the outer layer of stems, leaving the inner layer of stems intact. Pruning can also be done during the summer, but the amount pruned should be kept to a minimum. Light thinning of the annual growth is ok. Whenever possible, use loppers, shears, or pruners to remove branches and avoid making stubs. Make sure to remove any dead, diseased, or overgrown branches and stems to promote new growth.
