Four-year-old bushes and older require a severe pruning every other year. When pruning, remove all suckers from the base of the bush and all dead, broken or crossed branches. Cut the remaining branches back by 1/3-1/2 their length to encourage growth. The goal is to have 8-10 vigorous canes with about a third being old wood and 2 thirds being new growth.
