Wood sage should be kept moderately moist during the growing season with 12-24 inches of water applied over the course of several waterings to ensure the soil is evenly moist throughout the root zone. Water this plant deeply, allowing the water to soak into the soil, about every 5-7 days during sunny, warm weather and less often (about every 10-14 days) during cooler weather. For newly planted wood sage, water 2-3 times a week until the plants become established.

Wood sage (Salvia sylvestris 'Blauhugel' BLUE HILL) should be positioned in full sun to partial shade with at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight per day. During the summer months, it should be exposed to slightly more sunlight for a longer period of time, while in winter it's best to reduce the hours of sunlight to prevent leaf scorch.

Wood Sage (Salvia sylvestris 'Blauhugel' BLUE HILL) should be pruned during early spring before the plant resumes growth. Pruning of this plant should be focussed on removing dead, damaged or weak branches, as well as crossing shrubs. Cut back branches to strong shoots and remove dead flower spikes. Regular pruning will help to maintain the shape and structure of the bush, and will also encourage new growth and more frequent flowering. Depending on the size of the shrub, the overall amount pruned should be between 10 to 20 percent.
