Voodoo Lily is a striking plant with broad, heart-shaped leaves and flowers with an unpleasant smell. This plant needs moist, well-draining soil and prefers moderate to bright indirect sunlight. Water the plant deeply when the top inch of soil is dry. Make sure the soil does not dry out completely as this will stress the plant and cause the foliage to die back. It is best to water every 2-3 days in the summer, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between watering. In the winter, soil should be kept moist, but not wet. Be sure to not leave standing water in its pot.

Voodoo lily (Sauromatum venosum) prefers full sun or partial shade and should get approximately 4-6 hours of direct sunlight per day. A light shade during the hottest hours of the day may help to protect the plant from burning or drying out. It is best to avoid direct sunlight during afternoon hours (generally from 10 am - 5 pm) when the sun is at its hottest. Instead, provide bright, indirect sunlight such as a location beneath a deciduous tree in the morning or late afternoons.

The Voodoo Lily should be pruned as soon as the flowers and foliage begins to die back. This usually happens late summer to early fall. Pruning should be done by removing the entire plant at the base, or cutting back the foliage to 2-3 inches above the soil level. This will stimulate a new flush of growth in the early spring. When pruning, it is important to avoid damage to the tuber as it is the true Voodoo Lily plant.
