When grown in full sun, they should receive at least 6 hours of sunlight daily as too little sunlight will lead to a sparse flower crop and straggly growth. During the hottest parts of the day, the fan flower should get some shade to prevent its leaves from burning. In partial shade, the fan flower should receive at least 4 hours of sunlight daily. It is best that the fan flower receive its light in the morning or the late afternoon to reduce the amount of stress on the plant from the harshness of the sun during midday.

Fan Flower (Scaevola aemula) should be pruned lightly, immediately after blooming is finished. Pruning should be done to encourage new growth, flower production and better overall plant appearance. Remove any dead, diseased or damaged stems, and trim back the overall shape of the plant as needed. Pruning should occur seasonally, with a thorough cut back in early spring, followed by light trimming when blooms begin to fade.
