watering
Starry campion should be watered about once a week. Water enough to keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy, making sure to avoid the growth tips of the plant. During the growing season, fertilize the campion monthly with a high-nitrogen fertilizer. During the winter, water the campion only when the soil feels dry to the touch.
sunlight
Starry campion enjoys bright sunlight for at least 4 to 6 hours daily. It should be provided with some morning and late afternoon sunlight, which is the most effective for this species. For more optimal growth and flowering, optimal sunlight should fall in the 10 am to 4 pm range, with some protection from the midday sun. Keep in mind that a plant that is exposed to direct, full sunlight for extended periods of time can get sunburnt, especially young plants, so some shading should be provided.
pruning
Starry Campion (Silene stellata) should be pruned in late Fall to early Winter, when it is dormant. Prune any dead, diseased, or damaged stems first. Lightly prune to shape the plant if needed, but ensure that there are not more than 2 sets of active growing points on any stem. This is because pruning will cause a decrease in flowering for the following season. Prune the stems back to immediately above a set of leaves. Avoid cutting all the stems back to the same height.
