watering

Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil is dry to the touch. Water about twice a week during the growing season (spring and summer). This is usually more than enough. Make sure to keep the soil moist but not saturated. Do not water if the soil is wet; wait until it has become dry. During the winter, reduce watering to once a month at most, or just wait until the top inch of soil is dry to the touch before watering.

sunlight

The shredded umbrella plant (Syneilesis aconitifolia) requires full sun to partial shade to thrive. It prefers 6 to 8 hours of direct sun each day, but can tolerate some light shade during the hottest part of the day. While it can tolerate minor periods of shade and full sun, it will not thrive in either extreme for long periods of time. For best growth, morning sunlight in the spring and fall and afternoon sunlight in the summer are recommended.

pruning

The shredded umbrella plant should be pruned in late spring or early summer right after it flowers. Pruning should be done selectively since these plants respond well to hard pruning, but some parts of the plant should not be pruned too severely. Make sure to trim off any discolored or damaged foliage, as well as any dead stems. It is also a good idea to remove any leaves that are crowded or overlapping, and any branches that appear to be too long or are growing in an undesirable direction. Generally, prune the plant by removing up to 1-third of the shoots and branches. This will help maintain the overall shape of the plant and encourage bushy new growth.
