watering
Water your yew (Taxus media 'Beanpole') deeply. Aim to water every 10 days, but keep an eye on your plant- if the foliage is wilting or the soil is dry, water sooner. Yews don't like too much water, so be sure to check that the soil is dry down at least an inch or 2 before each watering, and don't water more than necessary. Yews also prefer consistent moisture so provide supplemental water during times of prolonged drought. After soil has been watered, allow it to dry slightly before the next watering, but don't let it dry out completely.
sunlight
Yew (Taxus media 'Beanpole') needs a minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight a day to remain healthy. The best time for the yew to receive sunlight is between 10am and 4pm. Sunlight during these hours will ensure the yew receives the optimum light to maintain vigour and grow new foliage and flowers. It is important to note the yew will not do well in extreme heat or cold; it needs to be protected from both. Therefore, it is best to avoid prolonged exposure to either extreme, for example, placing the yew in the open sun for longer than the recommended 6-8 hours of sunlight.
pruning
Pruning for yew (Taxus media 'Beanpole') should be done at least yearly in early spring. Pruning should be done while the shrub is still dormant and the temperature is mild. When pruning, remove dead, diseased, or crossing branches; prune branches to the desired shape. As a general guide, 1/3 of the oldest branches should be removed each year and growth should be kept below 1 foot per year. For good growth, the yew should be pruned down to 24–30 inches tall, and it will naturally return to its proper shape and size. When necessary, heavier pruning can be done by cutting down the entire yew bush to a desired height.
