American elm trees should be watered once per week, or at least every 5 to 7 days. Water deeply so that the roots receive a thorough soaking. Water in the morning hours, when temperatures are still relatively cool and the sun is not as strong; this helps reduce water evaporation. Depending on the size of the tree, use at least 10 to 20 gallons of water every time it is watered. Allow the water to penetrate the soil around the tree's roots as this will encourage deep and healthy root growth. If the soil is dry, increase watering slightly to ensure adequate hydration.
