watering

Wingstem (Verbesina alternifolia) should be watered when the top of the soil feels dry to the touch. As a general rule of thumb, the soil should be kept uniformly moist throughout the growing season. Water the wingstem deeply, about 1 to 2 inches below the surface, which will encourage deep rooting and less frequent watering. Wingstem also benefits from occasional misting with a spray bottle. During the hottest part of the summer, wingstem should be watered every 2-3 days. In cooler temperatures, it should be watered every 5-7 days. Applying a light layer of mulch, such as shredded bark, around the base of the plant can help retain soil moisture.

sunlight

Wingstem (Verbesina alternifolia) prefers full sun or partial shade for optimal growth, flowering, and overall health. It does best in areas where it receives 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight each day. In areas with extreme heat and humid conditions, some afternoon shade is beneficial. In locations with cooler climates, full sun is best. Wingstem should be planted in an area that is not shaded by large trees, walls, or buildings throughout the day for optimal light exposure.

pruning

Wingstem (Verbesina alternifolia) should be pruned during the summer or early fall before the end of August. Pruning should be done by removing spent blooms, crossing branches, and dead or dying stems. Trim the plant back to the main stem to encourage new growth and bushiness. Pruning should be done by 1/3 to 1/2 of its total height and width, leaving the remaining portion to ensure the plant has enough foliage to make it through the winter. Additionally, seedheads should be removed when they form in order to prevent spreading of the plant. Pruning help to promote more flowers and improved bushiness.
