The umbrella plant should be watered well enough to keep the soil evenly moist, but not too wet or soggy. Aim to water your Schefflera arboricola plant about once a week, allowing the top inch or so of soil to dry out between waterings. In more arid conditions, you may want to water the plant twice a week. When the temperatures are cooler, you may be able to stretch the watering intervals to every 10 days or 2 weeks.

The umbrella plant, Schefflera arboricola, prefers bright, indirect sunlight. This means it should be placed in an area that receives bright light all day, preferably near a window, but doesn't get direct sun. During the winter months, when sunlight is in short supply, the umbrella plant should receive 2 to 4 hours of bright, indirect sunlight. In the warmer months, it should receive 4 to 6 hours of bright, indirect sunlight.

Frequent, light pruning of the Umbrella Plant (Schefflera arboricola) throughout the growing season is the best way to keep the plant shaped and attractive. When needed, prune back unruly stems, starting in the early spring and continuing into the summer months, right up until mid-September or so. Pruning is not necessary for most of the year, as the Umbrella Plant is relatively slow growing and only requires occasional attention. Avoid pruning during cold winter months, as the plant can be damaged by frost.
