European cranberrybush should be watered about once or twice a week, depending on the season and climate. During the summer when temperatures are high and during times of active growth, it’s a good idea to water deeply once or twice a week. In winter, water once a month or less. Soak the soil the same way you would a houseplant, allowing for a few minutes for the water to be thoroughly absorbed. Be sure to check the soil prior to watering, so it doesn’t become too soggy. To determine when to water, check the top inch or 2 of the soil. If it is dry, it’s time to water.

European cranberrybush (Viburnum opulus 'Roseum') requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day to thrive and develop its best color. The optimum amount of sunlight for this plant species is 8 to 10 hours of direct sunlight, and it can safely tolerate up to 12 hours of direct sunlight. If it is placed in shady conditions, the leaves may be lighter in color, and the overall growth and height of the plant will be diminished. For optimal health, it is important to provide this plant species with adequate sunlight.

European cranberrybush should be pruned in late winter or early spring while the plant is still dormant. It is best to prune out large branches by a third and thin out the middle of the shrub to keep it open. This will help the plant stay healthy and allow light and air to reach all parts of the shrub. Dead or damaged branches should also be removed. European cranberrybush is a slow grower, so heavy pruning is not necessary.
