watering

Doublefile viburnum should be watered when the soil is dry to the touch and the surrounding air is warm. The plant likes a consistent level of moisture, so water deeply once every 7-10 days in the warmer months (April through September) and every 14-21 days during the cooler months (October through March). Water until the soil is thoroughly saturated, but be careful to not add too much. Too much water can cause root rot and other plant diseases.

sunlight

Doublefile viburnum (Viburnum plicatum f. tomentosum 'Watanabei') requires full sun to partial shade exposures, somewhere between 4-8 hours a day. This particular species is ideal for sheltered spots in the garden, as it is considered quite cold hardy and will enjoy plenty of sunlight in the early morning and late afternoon, when the sun is less intense. As a deciduous shrub, drought tolerance is less of a concern, but it is best planted with a regular water schedule for optimal growth and flower production.

pruning

Doublefile viburnum (Viburnum plicatum f. tomentosum 'Watanabei') should be pruned lightly and selectively in late winter or early spring while the plant is still dormant. Remove any dead, diseased, or damaged wood, and thin out overcrowded shoots. Be careful not to remove more than 1 third of the plant's foliage overall. Doing more than that can result in poor flowering or stunted growth. Heavy pruning is not advised as it disrupts the natural shape of the plant.
