watering

Water Spear Mint should be watered about once a week. It is best to water it thoroughly so that the soil is saturated, but not overly drenched. Make sure not to leave the plant standing in water, as this will cause root rot. Adjust accordingly if the temperature is especially hot or dry and you may need to water more frequently.

sunlight

Water spearmint (Mentha cervina) needs to be exposed to 5-6 hours of direct sunlight each day for optimal growth. The time of day in which the plant receives the sunlight isn't as important as the amount of light it receives. It's best to place water spearmint in an area that gets at least some sun for most of the day. This can be achieved by providing the plant with shade during the hottest parts of the day, such as in the late afternoon. Water spearmint can tolerate light shade, but too much shade can lead to leggy growth and poor flowering. At the same time, too much direct sunlight can lead to scorching or wilting of the leaves. When positioning your water spearmint, look for a spot that receives filtered sunlight for most of the day in order to achieve the desired amount of light for your plant.

pruning

Water spearmint should be lightly pruned in early to mid-spring to promote bushier, more productive growth. Pruning should be done before the plant sets flowering buds, as this will encourage the growth of more foliage. When pruning, remove any dead, diseased, or damaged stems, and then shape the plant by cutting back long stems to a smaller size, and making sure to leave the remaining foliage with at least 2 sets of leaves on each stem. Light pruning is all that is required, as the plant does not require severe or drastic pruning to remain healthy and productive.
