watering
Chinese lanterns should be watered every 2-3 days in the summer and every 3-5 days in the winter. Water deeply to saturate the soil until water comes out of the bottom of the pot. Water should just moisten the soil and not leave it soggy. Be sure not to over water, as this can cause root rot.
sunlight
Chinese lantern plants love and need plenty of sunshine for successful growth. They prefer 6-8 hours of direct sunlight each day; any less than that could produce weak growth and less vibrant flowers. During the summer when the days are longer, morning sun is recommended while in the winter, they should be placed in a spot that gets afternoon sun.
pruning
Pruning Chinese Lantern plants (Abutilon x hybridum) is essential to maintain their size and shape, as well as rejuvenate the plant by encouraging new growth. To keep your Chinese Lantern plant healthy and blooming abundantly, pruning should be done once a year in late winter/early spring before new growth begins. Start by removing any dead, diseased or damaged branches and foliage. Then, trim off at least 1-third of the oldest branches near the base. This will encourage new upright and free-flowering stems to grow. Pruning can also be helpful in preventing the plant from becoming too large. Make sure to clean any pruners you use to avoid spreading any disease between plants.
